Faces of Public Health: Autumn Grim

Public health is powered by people. By the individuals who show up every day to serve their communities, often without recognition, but always with purpose.

Throughout the month of April, we are proud to highlight the “Faces of Public Health.” A collection of stories that celebrate the professionals, partners, and leaders who make this work possible across Missouri. From local health department staff to community partners and system leaders, these individuals represent the heart of public health: committed, collaborative, and deeply connected to the communities they serve.

Each story is a simple but meaningful thank you. Written by members of our team, these reflections shine a light on the impact, leadership, and humanity behind the work. Whether it’s strengthening systems, supporting neighbors, building partnerships, or stepping up in moments that matter most, these individuals truly shine.

And this month, we’re proud to celebrate them.

‘Public health is sustained by individuals whose passion, skill, and steady commitment often unfold quietly behind the scenes. Autumn Grim is one of those people. An epidemiologist by trade and current Director of the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, her experience spans local, state, academic and hospital system roles. She has shaped statewide preparedness and response efforts, including Missouri’s Ebola response, and contributed to research, teaching, and collaborations that strengthen community health. Autumn embodies what is common across public health professionals- dedication to improving systems and a belief that communities deserve the best we can give.

I first met Autumn as a graduate student seeking data analysis experience. Despite a full schedule, she welcomed the chance to talk about her work and even offered a learning opportunity to explore state level data. Years later, during my agency’s first COVID‑19 case, she was the person I called. Her honesty, clarity, and confidence helped guide me through the uncertainty of the pandemic response. Over time, she became a mentor and sounding board, always willing to talk through challenges or simply “nerd out” about public health.

I am far from the only one she has lifted up and helped support. Autumn regularly volunteers for statewide projects and committees. She digs into emerging topics, and develops tools and resources to share with colleagues across Missouri. Even as a busy director, she prioritizes collaboration with community partners and invests in strengthening the public health workforce all without seeking recognition.

Like thousands of public health professionals, she does it because she is passionate about the work. Their commitment rarely makes headlines but shapes the health and resilience of entire communities.

Thank you,” Liz House, Program Director.
