Strengthening the Skills That Make Public Health Possible

When you work in public service, the mission is clear — serve your community well. What’s less clear is where you’re supposed to learn everything else that makes that work possible.

During my time at a local public health agency, it was incredibly difficult to find trainings that truly fit our needs as a local governmental organization. That gap became even more obvious when I stepped into a leadership role. Suddenly, my responsibilities went far beyond delivering evidence-based public health services. I needed to understand compliance with laws and regulations, human resources, data collection and analysis for decision-making, program management, community engagement — the list kept growing. And yet, most available trainings were either too broad, too generic, or not grounded in the realities of our day-to-day work.

We know this experience isn’t unique. At the Institute, we consistently hear from members and partners who are trying to do meaningful work, but who struggle to access practical, relevant training that builds the skills they actually need.

That’s why this new training line of service matters.

These trainings are designed to help professionals strengthen the foundational skills that make their work possible — from policy and advocacy to data analysis, program management, quality improvement, communications, and administrative functions. When staff feel confident and capable in these areas, they can focus more fully on what brought them to this field in the first place: improving lives and serving their communities.

Our approach is intentionally different. These aren’t one-size-fits-all sessions. They are targeted, interactive, and grounded in real-world examples, allowing participants to dig deeper and walk away with tools they can use right away. We also recognize that cost can be a barrier, especially now. Our pricing model emphasizes organizational access rather than per-person fees, creating affordable opportunities for entire teams, not just individuals, to learn together.

This line of service was built with members, not just for them. It grew out of lived experience in local public health and ongoing feedback from the organizations we serve. We will continue to adapt topics and formats based on what we hear, ensuring the trainings stay relevant and responsive.

Ultimately, the impact extends beyond the professionals in the room. When organizations have access to reliable, practical training, they operate more effectively, make better-informed decisions, and are better equipped to meet the needs of the people and communities they serve.

On a personal level, I’m proud to help create something I deeply wished had existed when I was in a local health department. It feels meaningful to now be part of providing a resource that supports not just LPHAs, but a wide range of organizations working every day to make their communities healthier and stronger.
