Why Does Dignity Matter in Public Health Work?

Every public health initiative, whether responding to an outbreak, improving environmental health, or developing community interventions, ultimately serves people. When dignity is at the center of that work, communities are more likely to trust public health professionals, participate in programs, and work with us to improve health outcomes. Treating people with dignity can improve program effectiveness, reduce barriers to care, and advance health equity. In my own public health work, I have seen that people are more willing to engage, share their experiences, and partner on solutions when they feel heard, respected, and valued.

In my experience, honoring dignity in public health work can take many forms. Public health professionals and agencies can collaborate with communities and actively seek input from diverse perspectives to better understand each community’s unique strengths, challenges, and priorities. They should partner with community members and include them in decision-making processes that affect their health and well-being. Within each community, people come from diverse backgrounds and may hold different opinions, values, and priorities. Public health professionals should actively listen to and respect each person’s perspective, even when their viewpoints differ. This demonstrates that community input is valued and helps build trust for future collaboration. In addition, dignity should guide public health communication. Our messages should be clear, culturally and linguistically sensitive, and presented with appropriate context. Failing to consider health literacy or community experiences can unintentionally create barriers, while clear and respectful messaging helps people make informed decisions about their health.

It is important to note that dignity in public health extends beyond human populations. Protecting animals, natural resources, and the environment supports healthier communities today and helps ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. As the One Health Approach demonstrates, human, animal, and environmental health are closely connected, and recognizing these connections helps public health professionals develop more effective and sustainable programs and policies. By promoting clean air and water, safe environments, and responsible stewardship of resources, we demonstrate respect for all forms of life and help create conditions in which current and future generations can thrive.

Ultimately, dignity reminds us that public health is more than programs, policies, and data. It is about people. By listening to communities, respecting diverse experiences, communicating thoughtfully, and promoting equitable opportunities for health, public health professionals and agencies can build trust and create lasting, meaningful change. When dignity guides our work, we not only improve health outcomes but also strengthen the relationships that make healthier communities possible.
